I know it's off topic, but there isn't really a place to post this.

What's the preferred newsreader of everyone? Outlook Express, while free & good enough, lacks many features. Seems NNTP and RSS/ATOM... blogs in general would be a good combo app for developers with watch lists, keyword watches, searches, etc.

I was thinking about starting an open source project and seeing if anyone wanted to be involved, but first was looking for pre-built alternatives.
 
I still use outlook express.. but every day I tell myself to find something better.
It would be really nice to have something that can integrate blogs and nntp... maybe there is something already. Let us know if you find something.

I use OE for the newsgroup and RSS pirate for RSS , maybe it would be a good idea if OE add support for RSS.

I use OE, but one of the things that I absolutely hate is the fact that
I can't view more than one group at a time. I think that an integrated RSS
reader would be good as well. Here are the pros and cons for each
reader/solution I have tried:

Outlook Express

pros - Downloads messages for groups fast, threading seems to be correct.
cons - Security dialog which forces me to wait when I reply to group and
poster, no MDI interface

Opera

pros - Allows viewing of multiple groups
cons - Slow to download messages, does not allow me to top-post.

Newsgator

pros - Will grab NNTP content as well as RSS content
cons - Does not thread discussions, does not allow me to post replies (at
least, I haven't found a plug in to do it yet)

NNTP for Outlook by MAPILab

pros - Newsgroups in outlook!
cons - Threading is better than Newsgator, but not as good as OE, it seems,
very slow, resource intensive.

OE is still my top pick.

Even more, mine freeze when I do a catch/up on a NG , I would like to be
able to see other NG in the meantime.

Totally agree

Let's hope somebody at MS listen to way to improve OE , it has been almost
the same since the 4.X
I heard somewhere that MS has a new IE evangelist:

I certainly hope Dave Massy -- the 'evangelist' -- can bring a sense
of urgency to a much needed and way overdue update for IE.

Aside from security enhancements and additional support for page
display standards such as CSS and XSLT if it were me, my objective
would enable IE to become a developer's paradise making it much
easier for developers to create and offer their own tabbed page solutions,
browser bars, task panes and so on.

I use Mozilla Thunderbird for NNTP
http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/releases/

While it has a couple of rough edges, it's far better than OE for
newsgroups.

I think there may be a plug-in to do RSS, but I use SharpReader for RSS:

I used to look for an Agent replacement. I've tried to get comfortable
with Outlook Express several times but we never hit it off. After 7
years, I've given up looking for an Agent replacement.

I use OE, but am becoming less and less enthralled with it. Features I wish
I had:
1) I want to prioritize threads, across all groups, where I was involved in
the discussion (to see if anyone replied to one of my responses).
2) I want to be able to filter threads by keywords, perhaps excluding
threads about "investment opportunities in Kenya" or threads that contain
photos
3) I want to prioritize threads by the number of replies where the reply was
not sent by the original poster (too many folks reply to themselves).
4) I want to see a screen report of the number of threads online at the
moment, and the number of which I have been involved in.

I have found Mozilla Thunderbird to be quite good, and its open source
so you can add new features if you want. Better than starting your own
newsreaer
