I have tried to configure offline files using a dial up
connection but all i get when it synchronises is 'unable
to connect to \\servername\share$ the specified network
name is no longer available'

i can ping our network by ip address by ip address but not
host so i don't know if that is something to do with it?
if i 'ping servername', which i have added in my hosts
file I get ping request could not find host data. please
check the name and try again

I have managed to get the part below working but now when
it starts to syncronise it askes for a username and
password. If i use our domain administrator account it
works fine but if i use the users own one it says 'The
user name you typed is the same as the user name you
logged in with. That user name has already been tried. A
Domain controller cannot be found to verify that user
name.'

Surely a dns or hosts file error, from the description you provide.

Simple fix: instead of using \\servername\$share, use \\ipaddress\$share
and see if you can acess, e.g. \\192.168.1.1\documents

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
