Whenever I go to the office update site for Office XP it now returns the
message it is unable to check for updates. One of the messages is that the
Windows Installer patch files from previously applied updates may be missing.
Can anyone give me advice as to how to get back to being able to have the
site recognize what updates I need.

Thanks in Advance

I followed the instructions in the Microsoft support article 295823 to remove
all regsitry references to Microsoft Office using the Windows Install CleanUp
Tool. After doing this, I tried to reinstall Microsoft Office Professional as
instructed. It would not reinstall and gave me a message that a qualifying
product could not be found. This is not an upgrade, it is a full version of
Office Professional. What is being referred to when the message about no
qualifying product could be found pops up? I think this solution would solve
the problem with Office Update if I could reinstall Microsoft Office. Please
reply.

I really don't know at this point and you've suffered far too long. I would
recommend that you make a call to Microsoft and get them to walk you through the
needed diagnostics and whatever solution they provide. They know and understand
the logic and mechanics of how the installer works under the covers.

You'll find the right phone number by going to http://support.microsoft.com/ and
under "Support Options" on the left click on "Contact Microsoft".

If you have the previous version CD just pop it into the CD during the
installation, and it will authenticate the update.
