Office SP3 but OL2000

I have a small business (myself and secretary basically).
Back in August '03 my computer guy installed Windows XP
Pro SP1a and Office XP Small Business Edition. But I only
wanted 2 computers on a simple network, no server, and he
said Outlook 2002 has to have a server, so he installed
Outlook 2000 and a program called MSMail4XP.

It has all worked okay until the last few days. My
computer's Outlook is now crashing every time within a
few minutes of starting it (even though the secretary's
is unaffected). It brings up an error message "MS Outlook
has encountered an eror and needs to close..." (and Error
Report info mentions ModName: fldpub). If I send Error
Report it justs tells me to use scan for updates, and the
scan suggest I install Office XP Service Pack 3 (which
says it cannot be uninstalled once installed) and maybe
Office 2000 Service Release 1a.

1. Do you think that if I instal Office XP SP3 it could
cause problems for my use of Outlook 2000/etc?
2. Would Ofice 2000 SR1a cause problems for Office XP e.g.
Word 2002?
3. Will either of these help the problem anyway?
4. Does anyone know a way I can use Outlook 2002 and
still have my small non-server network? Then I
wouldn't have this drama.

I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks Rodney

I think you need a new computer guy :)

The fldpub error is caused by netfolders. MSMail4XP isn't needed with
Ol2000, only ol2002, but ol2002 doesn't support netfolders. More info on the
error is here: http://www.google.com/search?as_q=fldpub&num=100

What kind of an internet connection do you have? What do you share with the
other user - just email or also calendar and contacts?

Thanks for prompt reply. No comment on the computer guy!

I just caused the error when I tried to manually send
an update for one of the shared folders (via Properties/
Sharing), so I agree that's the cause. Also explains why
it crashes a few minutes after each startup - that's when
it is trying to check for updates.

We have shared folders for Contacts, Calendar and Tasks,
and send each other emails via email addresses listed
under "Postoffice Address List". (Incoming external /
internet emails just go to either computer's inbox,
whichever computer just checked the ISP, which
suits us fine.)

Our internet connection is Broadband ADSL from the
secretary's computer, and I access it via the local
network (Local Area Connection).

I guess you're saying I could have had Outlook 2002 with
MSMail4XP all along, and can change over to it now??

I await your words of wisdom on above and generally.

Thanks Rodney

Nope, because Ol2002 doesn't do netfolders. Since you have broadband, you
could use Yahoo (or MSN) to sync/share your calendars and contacts and
continue to use the Workgroup Post office for email between you. Yes, it
seems silly to sync over the internet, but it also gives you the added
benefit of being able to check your calendar/contacts from anywhere you have
internet access.

For just two people, I would set up one Yahoo account and install intellsync
on both computers and sync the same account.
