Anyone have problems installing old apps on the new laptops? My company
still used access 97 but the setup wont run.

Another app, Act 2000, runs but with problems.

Running 32bit Windows XP

I know that office 97 installs on xp, it runs on all of our machines
but the new dual core laptops.

I cant even install it. If I click on install from the menu, hour glass
comes up and then nothing.

if i try setup.exe from cd, it tells me path cant be found. I tried
different cd's, same problem. i can take these cd's to other machines
and it installs just fine. I tried installing off network share, same
error. copied cd to local hd, same error.

All 3 of the dual core machines have this problem.

I suppose it would be prudent to consider upgrading
to Office 2003 since Office 97 is considered obsolete.

here we go again. Advising the OP to buy something they probably don't need!
carey, if Office 97 does everything the OP needs, there's NO NEED to spend
out money on somrthing they don't need or want!

haha yes well that plan as been in the works, as soon as the database
guy can get the database working 100% in xp it will be done.

But then he would have to buy a copy or license for each machine.
97 lets you install it on lots of machines (grin on legality)

How is it obsolete - the main difference in later versions is
primarily their web/internet relationship/functionality. If a user has
no need for those bells and whistles the O97 is still an adequately
functional office suite!!

I wouldn't get too excited about rushing out and buying multiple
upgrade licences.

I'd get just one and "test" the installtion first - it could quite
possibly be some other configuration problem with these newer
machines.

Have you tried turning off the anti-virus software (one of the
absolute first steps when any program won't install)?

I had a similar problem on an Intel D830 dual core desktop with an older
game. My solution was to copy the entire CD to the HD, and install with
the setup.exe in compatibility mode for Win98. Following that, I also
had to set *every* *.exe in the install folder to Win98 compatibility.

I don't know about the "path not found", but I suspected it had
something to do with the NTFS file system. FWIW.

I agree - have been running Office 97 on XP pro for a long time.
It also will install on the latest 32 bit Vista beta (haven't seen it tried
on the 64 bit yet).

Hi
I have exactly the same problem with Office 97 Pro and XP Pro on New
Latitude notebook I have tried the copy to hard disk changed compatibility
mode etc but still get path can't be found
Am in great need of fix as my main Access 97 database refuses to compile in
Access 2000.

Compatibility mode seems like a good idea....

If that doesn't work... perhaps download Virtual Server 2005 R2 while
MS has it available for free?? Install it to a Virtual PC? I know
it's around about way of going at it.... but in a push... just might
work as well.

Ahhh yes me as well - My heart dropped looking at the new laptops that have
to be in place next week - HOWEVER!!!!!

If it is a Dell laptop (Mine is a lattitude 620 Dual Core) it comes with
security software called EMBASSAY - once removed I was able to run the
Office 97 Pro setup (I did copy the entire CD to the desktop)

I could also install the two service packs AOK and it appears to be running.

I also ran the setup program in compatibility mode first time around but it
seems to work without that as well.

I hope this is helpful!!!

What can I say - thank you so much. Brilliant, worked like a dream, removed
the Embassay suite changed the Hatten.ttf file and it even installed
straight over the top of Office 2000 with no problems whatsoever.
Sheer genius!
Thank you again, it has saved me many hours
