When trying to install Word I get a message"Htmlmarq.ockwas unable
toregister itself in the system registry" andwhen I accept this I am
told that the installation is not complete. How can I resolve this
problem?

Sorry, no idea - you should try an Office group, as this is not a Windows XP
issue.

Note that Office 97 is waaaaay out of support now and I don't know how much
help you'll get with it!

See: http://aumha.org/nntp.htm for help finding newsgroups.

True that it likely is not specifically a "Windows XP issue". I run
Office 97 on a few Windows XP machines, and have no problems. It works
fine under Vista, too! And contrary to Microsoft advertising, have seen
no sign of dinosaurs yet.

It may, however, be an issue that occurs while running Windows XP, and
may also be something that can be fixed. Try searching on google for
htmlmarq.ocx - one of the first few hits you get may be of help.

Office 97 SBE was available only as an OEM license, and may
legitimately be used only on the computer with which it was originally
purchased. It cannot legally be transferred to a newer computer.

I don't think that's correct.

I have a set of original SBE 97 v2 CD's right here in front of me that
I purchased standalone from one of the BigBox stores
when it was available (would have to look up the receipt
from many yrs. ago.)

Still use the programs every day, none of them have added
anything that's of any value since they came out, I have
never upgraded.

If one were to upgrade the operating system on the original computer (say
from Windows 98 to Windows XP), should they not still be able to use the
copy of Office on that machine that was sold with the machine? I would
not necessarily assume that they were talking about installing it on a
different, newer computer - unless you were implying that the problem is
due to some licensing issue.

I have switched to Office2003, but I most definitely bought 97 SBE at a
legitimate retail outlet way back when---. I don't remember which store,
but definitely bought separately from a computer.

I trust you aren't using Outlook from that suite. Ugh - it was chock full of
bugs and problems (MS released OL98 as a free, downloadable upgrade for a
long time due to that).

While my memory is admittedly fallible, I'm confident I'm correct, and
stand by the statement. Unfortunately, Microsoft's web site no longer
seems to have any information on Office 97 licensing (that I can find,
anyway), so we may never really know.

By any chance, does the CD read "For distribution with a new PC
only...?" Does the Product ID (Any Office Application > Help >
About...) contain the letters OEM? If so, it's an OEM license,
regardless of how or from whom it was acquired.

Still use the programs every day, none of them have added
anything that's of any value since they came out, I have
never upgraded.

Can't argue with that; Office 97 is more than adequate for most
people's needs.

Yes, that wouldn't be a problem.

not necessarily assume that they were talking about installing it on a
different, newer computer -

While it's not 100% certain that the OP was installing it on a new
computer, the original post implied that, to my mind.

Nope.

Product ID (aka CD Key + a couple other number groups) =
81857-731-XXXX172-XXXXX
(XXX for obvious reasons)
No OEM in it. Shows in Help>>About in
Word, Publisher, Excel.

Can't argue with that; Office 97 is more than adequate for most

Interesting. Barring the discovery of further information, I'll have
to concede your point about there having been non-OEM Office 97 SBE
licenses. Funny, though, how it's taken so many years for someone to
point that out.

I got the same error but I am using at least Word and Excel with
no problem. Give it a try.

You'd be far better off with Open Office 2 than office 97........
