I can't seem to find out where one can go to find out what a particular newsgroup is for.
IOW, this group has "perform_maintain". Is this for performance? For maintanence? For
performing maintenence? I looked on the Google Groups info and nowhere is this
information available. When you click on "info" it simply list number of posts, etc. with
nothing about the TOPIC for a given newsgroup. This will add another day or two to
waiting to post on my question.

Why don't you ask whatever question that you have and if this is the wrong
place, someone will suggest a more appropriate newsgroup.

microsoft.public.windowsxp.general is usually a good place to start.
