Everytime I start up the computer, it runs some DOS scrip, the Windows
graphic pops up and a msg saying "off mode in 5 sec" pops up and then it
just shuts off and there's nothing more. I've rebooted, reconnected cables
etc, still the same. Do you have any suggestions as to what it might be or
how I might correct this? I have some urgent work to complete and am
completely at the mercy of that computer.

Many thanks

Michelle

The "off mode in 5 sec" message is from your monitor, so it isn't
getting a signal from your computer. This could be because your
resolution is set too high and the monitor can't handle it, because
your power supply and/or other hardware has died, or other factors.
There just isn't any way to tell without looking at your machine. Take
the computer to a good local repair shop and have them check it out for
you.

One that is worth trying, as first effort, is to boot hitting F8 as
BIOS info goes to black and take Safe Mode. If it is that sort of
monitor trouble that should let you in and allow getting to Start -
Run MSconfig.exe where you can check /BASEVIDEO on the Boot.ini page and
reboot to normal mode but with basic video, as used in Safe mode.

Having booted with that check the settings at Display - Settings, and
also make sure the video drivers are OK: I would download the latest
ones *from the maker of the video card* and install them
