How do I reinstall an OEM version on a different drive? Currently the OS is installed on a 120GB factory Dell. I added a 60GB drive which is were I want to reinstall the OS, so that I can use the 120GB drive for personal files.

You do not need to have an operating system installed on a
second drive if all you wish to do is store files on it. Just
format that drive NTFS using Disk Management.

Carey - you misread the question - XP is already installed on the 120, he
wants to remove it and reinstall on the 60. As I don't know how OEM
installations work, I don't know whether that would be possible - it may
baulk if Dell customise their installations to install only on the hardware
they supply...

Thanks for responding. To answer your question, I want to have XP Pro running on the 60GB drive and use the 120GB for storage. Currenty it is the other way around.

A. Set the jumper setting of the 120GB drive to master
and set the 60GB drive jumper to slave. Make sure
your EIDE cable is connected accordingly.

B. Perform a "clean install".

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for you mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

2. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.

3. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
4. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
5. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

6. Clean Install Windows XP

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

C. Afterward, use Disk Management to format the 60GB drive.

D. If you should get a dual-boot menu at startup, follow this procedure:

Go to Start > Run and type in: MSCONFIG , and hit enter,
Click the BOOT.INI tab.
Next, click "Check All Boot Paths".
This procedure should correct your BOOT.INI file.

Have you considered cloning the old drive to the new one? You can use
imaging software and not have to start over with a clean install.
If you don't have the software, you can download a full functioning 30 day
demo of BootIT NG that can clone the old drive tot he new one.
