I had to upgrade an HP Pavilion from home to pro to get
it on our network. Long story short, I had to reformat
the drive and reinstall from scratch. HP does not supply
driver disks, just a set of system restore disks with
home. When I tried to just upgrade, I kept ending up with
NTLDR missing. I now have the machine rebuilt, but since
I've never had to deal with this before...my questions
is: Do the oemxx.inf numbers need to match the previous
version of drivers or this a randomly assigned number? I
used a 3rd party program to identify drivers, versions, &
installed files after restore to home and also I
completed the rebuild.

Thanks

All you have to due is visit http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html
and download, then install, the latest Windows XP drivers designed for your
specific HP Pavilion computer. In many instances, HP will post updated drivers
that work better than the ones originally installed by the factory.

Not anymore they don't. They provide minimal driver
support, recommend you contact microsoft and if necessary
request a set of recovery disks.
see: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?
lc=en&docname=c00026811&lang=en&cc=us

Plus you have no control over the recovery. It completely
rewrites you OS and programs settings on anything that
came on the machine. I couldn't even get the disks to do
a standard recovery (which is supposed to be non-
destructive), it forced me to do a destructive reformat
recovery because I had upgraded the machine to pro.

NO, Microsoft will NOT provide any type of recovery CD for HP
computers.
Your link does not even suggest that.
Do you have another source for this incorrect information?

Drivers are the responsibility of the manufacturer, HP in this case.
If HP chooses not to update any drivers, that is an issue between you
and HP.
I would be very surprised if drivers are no longer updated by HP.
Not all drivers, but I am sure they update some.
