I recently installed MS Office 2003 and I intend to convert my email from
Outlook Express to Outlook 2003. Any advice on the conversion? Any pitfalls
to avoid?

I have never used Outlook and no manual is provided so I wonder if the
transition to Outlook will be worth it. Opinions?

Once Outlook is set up, you can use its Import Wizard to import messages and
Contacts from Outlook Express as long as OE is on the same partition. Be
aware that only the default folders will be imported from OE.

Outlook and OE are completely separate and unrelated programs. There is a
wealth of information on the difference between the two--far more than a
newsgroup post could contain. Search the Internet. Start here:

Don,
There is no printed manual on Outlook 2003, but plenty of help screens in
the system.
You might at first not like it as it has some real differences from OE. Some
of the simple things that are not in Office 2003 are like the automatic add
sender to the address book and things like that. Also if might seem there is
much more "button pushing" to just send a simple email.
So you really have to look at Outlook 2003 as a totally different type
operation the OE. Its like going from WordPad to Word 2003. There is so much
more you can do in Outlook 2003, but does have a learning curve to really
get a good feel for it. Most people ( me to ) did not like some of the extra
steps to Outlook 2003 at first, but then when I got more used to it, I
really like it. I use OE for a Newsgroup reader (none in Outlook) and for
maybe half of my emails, but Outlook 2003 for me is the winner when sending
alot of emails and especially ones that I want better control over. Most of
the time, the conversion goes fine on mail and address, I would just follow
the wizards and you should be just fine.

Don, please be careful. When I tried to migrate from OE
to Outlook 2003 it was a bad experience and I have
reverted back to OE because of the many error messages
which I encountered, in particular with programs such as
Norton and my Download Accelerator. Here are some of the
problems which I posted in another message, which I hope
might help . .

""I have just purchased the MS Office 2003 standard
edition
which includes Outlook 2003. I was previously
using Outlook Express. I had so many problems after
trying to upgrade to Outlook 2003 that I ended up
uninstalling all of MS Office 2003 then reinstalling it
without the Outlook 2003 piece. This means that I am
stuck with Outlook Express, which is obviously less
powerful than Outlook 2003 but it doesn't seem to be
worth the apparently enormous effort to fix all of the
problems which I have when I try to install Outlook 2003.
Any suggestions ? Here are the kind of problems which I
had when I tried upgrading to Outlook 2003 from Outlook
Express. . .
1. My Download Accelerator program stopped working, so I
couldn't download any files from the Internet.
2. Every time I opened Outlook 2003, I would get the
error message "this application has requested the runtime
to terminate in an unusual way", though I seemed to be
able to continue to open Outlook 2003 after acknowledging
the error message.
3. When openinig Outlook 2003, I would also often get the
error message "Outlook experienced a serious error last
time the add-in NORTON ANTISPAM . . . ".
All of these problems disappeared as soon as I
uninstalled Outlook 2003 and went back to Outlook
Express. Is it always this messy to try to install
Outlook 2003 when upgrading from Outlook Express ?""
