OE Sudden problem. Default foders only appearing and some subscriber NGs missing including this one

Today I started OE and found that all my extra folders (where autosorted mail goes) and several of my Newsgroups had disappeared.
Not sure why this happened (though I did do my usual monthly 'cleanup' earlier in the day (delete and compact)) But I have never
lost the folders before or any subscribed NGs. Anyone any suggestions?
Have recovered lots by restoring from an old OEbackup but still do not know why this happened.
WindowsXP restore to last week sometime did not recover anything in OE.
Must obviously use OEBACKUP more frequently in future

Uncheck in OE the option Tools > Options > Maintenance tab
'Delete newsgroup messages at x days'

I'm not sure if that tip was supposed to correct the problem or prevent it occuring.
Having used MSOE more or less from day one (about ten years) without problems I was a bit surprised to find all my 'folders' missing
and several (but not all) of my 15 subscribed newsgroups. The biggest loss was of the folders as I have now lost several weeks of
'moved or autosorted' mail and news.
I am not sure if your suggestion will do anything other than clog up the disk even more and require more frequent manual
maintenance.
However I've turned autodeletion off for a week or two.
