OE Slow and getting slower

This is an ongoing issue. I downloaded the update/patch called: Security
Update for Windows XP (KB828028). I did this through the Update system.
OE6 began to be very slow to load. I mean the splash screen sits a long
time before the app window shows up. OE also lost its send/receive buttons'
functionality. I used system restore to go back to before the update and
that corrected the problem.

I was told here that the update probably didn't have anything to do with
this. I reinstalled the update, but now it's happening again (but not the
button faliure), and now it's getting slower and slower to load. I
completely believe that could be a coincidence (ala David Hume), but I'm
trying to describe the whole context. I have no axe to grind about the
update, but...

After some back and forth with a couple of people on this list to ferret out
what else was going on, I was led to this URL:

http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/problems/performance.htm#slowstart

The article there talks about problems with OE slowing down after
_reinstalling_ McAffee while OE was open. The article was about a W98
machine. I am on an XP box, had OE open, was downloading Norton virus
definitions.

The article suggests registry changes, and I am hesitant to go into the
registry given the asymetry of my situation and the one in the article --
particularly that I'm running a different operating system. Same with the
other suggestions about extracting various files and drivers. I've done all
the other things the article suggests: compacting messages; defragging
drive.

I don't have a lot of messages in my inbox. The only thing really new here
(besides the update) is that I recently started using OE for reading this
newsgroup. I see "1842 message(s), 1833 unread, 62560 not downloaded" on
the lower left bar. I have a 40 gig HDD and about 256 megs RAM, though some
of that is dedicated to on-board video.

This slowness is something I can live with, I guess, but it is getting
worse. Any help would be appreciated.

I should add that I was NOT using OE6 for the newsgroup when this first
happened. That was a consequence of my having trouble with the web based
reader for the newsgroup when looking for help on this issue in the first
place.
