I've just tried to access a website I've always used
(www.thecounter.com) but got the "The page cannot be displayed" error
page. On checking tracert www.thecounter.com immediately gets resolved
to 127.0.0.1. with no other hops.

I haven't been anywhaere near with anything web or IP based and was
wondering what the hell happened and how to fix it. It was working
yesterday.

All the other sites I've tried seem to work fine.

The first question I always ask is if you can ping the web sites. if not,
check the DNS settings first, or post ipconfig /all here.

or you can go to http://www.ChicagoTech.net >do-it-yourself tools to do the
troubleshooting.

Hi,

Check you HOSTS file (usually in C:\Windows\System32
\drivers\etc folder) and make sure no entry exists for
this site.

Try a NSLOOKUP command from a DOS prompt and query the DNS
server. See if the fault lies at your ISP rather than your
machine.

Blimey. That'll be it. Found hundreds of 'spyware' sites all resolving
to 127.0.0.1.

No idea where they came from. I certainly didn't put them there.
