I have resently had to re-instal XP due to conflicts with a hardware update
and have now finished fully patching it and scanning and installing decent
firewalls/anti virus - Zone Alarm Security Suite.

Anyway heres the odd thing, on start up I see a little red and green shield
with a ? mark on it which has a windows XP style yellow pop up text box which
says.

"Security Warning: your computer may be infected with harmful or unwanted
software!"

http://www.amaena.com/securityworm8...1133&affid=pp_6746772541&p=was&ax=0&ed=0&ex=0

Clearly this isnt a microsoft download becasue of the websight address being
iffy and the gramma being quite terrible so I havent even attempted to let
this thing download software.

I have done a full system scan with Hitman Pro 2 and the system is clean as
a whistle.

So my question is "What is this junk and how can I make it go away?"

Amendum - another little niggling problem is I dont seem to be able to open
the WMI managment consol in order to prevent java update scheduler running at
startup - any ideas?

When I let it open the web page it wants to direct me to I get a flash
window with the microsoft log and a couple of links to downloads for supposed
antivirus software which take me to this websight

your system is infected with malaware, many AV apps do not detect malaware.
Try an online scan at Trend Micro
Download, update & run at least SpyBot, Adaware, MS WinDefender.

I thought so, Hitman uses SpyBot and Adaware and a number of others like
Ewido..
but I will give them a second try on thier own and see if that makes a
difference and try MS defender.

Just tried the Microsoft maliciouse software removal tool which detected and
"Partial removed" something so maybe it got it.

Thanks.

Any thoughts about the issue with WMI managment conssol not opening?

Your system is not "clean as a whistle"; it is infected with the Vundo
trojan/Winfixer type of cr*p.

Go through the preparatory steps here:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Then do the specific steps here:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Winfixer

When all else fails, run HijackThis and post your log in one of the
specialty forums listed at the first link above (not here, please).

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

WinAntiVirus 2005 Pro, from the same folks who market WinFixer.

Turn off Windows Messenger service; I believe that'll stop the pop-up.

No, sorry but that won't do it for the OP. See previous replies for the
correct answer.

Thanks Malke,

I am trying everything in here, so far nothing found anything so I am trying
the specific steps and will try HijackThis if that fails.

To be fair its dosent seem a massivly harmful malware just an annoying popup
that can be told to go away. I was more concerned about the managment consol
not opening - which I guess is becasue of the malware too.
