Odd quirk when using SFS

This is the situation. I have several applications pointing to files
located on networked drives. When the application tries to access
those files during its initialization, it gets an error message which
is related to access denied. If the networked drive is browsed with
Windows Explorer prior to running the applications, access is Ok and
the applications work normally. This browsing has to be done once by
the acessing computer and will last throughtout the entire Windows
session. Browsing the network drives will have to be repeated
everytime the acessing computer restarts.

Network drives are on an XP Pro and being acessed by an XP Home.
Simple file sharing is enabled.

I've also noticed shortcut Icons default to a generic one when the
application is on a network drive. After browing the network drive,
the icons display their specific application.

Not knowing what the application SFS is in referring to its context, making
a guess would be it may not recognize the drive until you've been connected
to the drive.
One solution would be as you've stated, browse to the drive before using the
application, a second, you can verify in Folder Options of Explorer, that
the checkbox for "Automatically search for network folders and printers" is
ticked, although this does slowdown opening Explorer, especially when the
network resource is not available, as you must wait for it to timeout before
Explorer becomes responsive.
