When I copy a dot exe file onto my Kingmax USB 2 flash drive it seems to
become extremely slow if not freezes the whole system. I have checked and
confirmed that the USB port is running at usb2, no spyware, malware, Trojans
or virii!! I do not have any drivers installed for this unit as it does not
need them under XP SP2. There is no USB security software installed - just a
plain vanilla connection and Windows finds it. No problems with other file
formats. If I rename the suffix from .exe to say .bmp it works correctly.
I'm running AVG virus checker and OutPost 1 firewall. Small exe files like
Gibson's "probe my ports" etc are okay.
The flash disk is formatted to FAT 32 although I have tried it on just plain
FAT! bad move... back on FAT 32
Any clues?

This may actually be AVG that is checking the file for viruses that
slows down the transfer. It would not surprise me if it waited until
the file was completely copied over to the USB Flash drive and then
scanned it off the flash drive which can be quite slow.

I fixed the problem but I still don't know what happened in the first place
; I deleted all of my USB drives, rebooted and let XP find them again - this
time all's well. It's annoying that I do not know why the problem existed in
the first place...no doubt the ghost in the machine phenomena... bye the way
I did test after I deleted AVG, Outpost and turned off XP's firewall, the
problem remained, I even defragged and held my left foot at an angle of 37
degrees! aaaaargh
