Nice one EU - shame the money wont be spent properly or put to good
use. Plus MS might have to pay the EU a daily amount of pocket money.

No doubt for MS, this fine is just a pizz in the ocean ;-)

Of course the money will be well spent to support the cultivation of
crops known to thrive in Europe such as rice in Spain and Italy, tobacco
in Greece and wine lagoons for industrial use! How could you be so
cynical! :)

'The commission said the penalty is the result of Microsoft’s failure to
fully comply with the EC’s request to provide complete and accurate
documentation allowing developers to write software enabling non-
Microsoft group servers to be fully interoperable with Windows PCs and
servers.'

So in the EC, there is no concept of 'proprietary' ? Why should M$ be
forced to do that ? That's like saying Allen/Bradley must give complete
documentation of the s/w and h/w of all of their PLC systems to Siemens,
a competitor.

Why is it unfair competition in their eyes ?

You may say that you agree with it, but that is only because it is M$.

Of course, isn't the EC the same body that came up with RoHS regulations
? (Maybe not.)

The EU's next target are mobile telephone companies - they have already told
them to cut their charges, in partic from Europe to the UK, by 70% - the EU
says its not enough.
What I didn't realise is that you get charged for 'receiving' a call in
Europe from the uk?????? - the charges are from £1.50 to £2.75 per minute.

That's it! With the silly DIY progs on TV; cork floors - the new,
latest, ultimate, brilliant and so necessary product we all need to
cover our floors and walls! Do not forget their excellent thermal
values. I'm just making my application to the EU to plant them in The
Orkneys!

You should see the charges I've incurred receiving European calls whilst
working in China1 (x10)!

Welcome to the EuroTAX (getting more common in the US as well). The EC
knows full well that Microsoft will pass these costs on to its European (and
possibly other) customers. It also knows that it has little taxing
authority but itself.

So, it poses a $357 million tax on Europeans using Microsoft as its proxy.
The States and Federal government did the same using the tobacco companies.
Large companies comply with these large structured settlements because the
governments that impose them become their biggest defenders for fear of
losing their regular structured payments.

Isn't that also known as "extorsion"?

Only if you or I tried to do it. However, when our government does it, it's
called "corporate oversight". You see, we lack the pristine benevolent
intentions of our kind, caring government.

Your KMA
My reply 'it might well do one day' was on the assumption that the 'K' stood
for 'KICK' and not any other word.
Sorry about that - didn't want you to get the wrong idea :-) :-)
from my reply.

Antioch,

KMA is for Kiss My...

Fifth item here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KMA

When I was a kid, someone would say KMA and someone would *always* respond
with MTS.

Mark The Spot. ;-)
