Using XP Pro, Teacher / Student Office 2003.
Whenever I shut down Outlook 2003, the system tray icon
(clock in square box) does not go away. If I try to re-
start Outlook, the app does not launch. Task Manager shows
multiple outlooks running (various sizes). If I stop the
apps, and try to restart Outlook, same problem.

I have to re-boot PC to get Outlook back. But - it's
forgotten my settings. On PC shut down, always have an
app that doesn't want to close or waiting for DDE to stop
or something.

I've de-installed Office several times to no avail. Any
thoughts? Is there a way to remove Office completely from
the registry without having to re-format hard drive?

Thanks, Gary

Microsoft has a utlilty called the office cleaner. It
removes the reg settings.

Thanks Alex,

I've tried looking for office cleaner in MS support to no
avail. Msicu.exe and Msicuu.exe are apparently not used
with Win XP.

Do you have a link to the app?

Thanks, Gary

I have the eraser for w2k. It has not been tested on XP,
but should work. I could email it to you. I got it off of
the premier site.

Jason,

Any thoughts on the original problem? Added info - I can
use GO > News exactly once per re-installation of Office
2003. After that News is not available, and can not be
added back into the menu <grimace>

The issue may be caused by the following two conditions being true:

1. Outlook Express (msimn.exe) is not configured as the default News
handler.

2. The "Personalized Menus and Toolbars" (.pip) files are corrupted.

We resolved the issue by configuring Outlook Express as the default
Newsgroup
handler and delete the MSOut11.pip and Word11.pip files.

set outlook Express as the default newsreader from IE and when opening it do
NOT
set it as the default news reader

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel
|
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, click the "Don't ask me again" box and then click the No button.
You may need to reset the menu or toolbar using Tools, customize.
