I have a NVIDIA GeForce4MX420 card.I am trying to play DOOM3,no visuals.I
delete NVIDIA display drivers.Download new drivers from Nvidia home page, can
now play game.Microsoft wants to update drivers, when I do this the game won't
play. The microsoft version is earlier than Nvidia version, why won't microsoft
recognise the later version? Will microsoft update its own version so it won't
want to update the newer version with its own older version?

More than likely the ones Microsoft wants you to download are WHQL
certified, while the Nvidia ones are not.

Not a big deal, just ignore it.

Don't use the ones from MS, simply ignore them, as it is a recommended
update (I personally DO NOT ever use MS's recommended updates, unless, after
reading about them, they have some benefit for me). From what I understand,
those updates are meant for multiple systems in a business/office situation,
where the need for real video drivers (as you need) are not the norm.

That's not true, they are primarily meant for the office domain situation.
If you ever go to WU, and see a similar update, the dates are many times,
about a year older than anything recently released. I have an ATI 128meg
9800 Pro, and I saw an update there for a driver (which was 3megs, and that
in itself is not correct) dated Dec 2003 at WU! The newest one from ATI to
date, is WHQL certified.

It is best to get the latest drivers from the card manufacturer, not WU.

Hi

Use the Nvidia drivers - not the ones offered to you by MS. That applies to
all hardware - use the drivers from the manufacturer's web site and not
those available via Windows Update.
