Nvidia driver question

I'm having an issue loading the 32 beta driver. Two times the screen went
black at the end and nothing happened. I had to manually reset; and one time
the system was unusable after that. One other time on a re-install I got
prompted at the end to reboot (what i would normally expect.)

So, is it better to use the Nvidia driver that comes with the install. It's
dated April of this year, so it's not toooo old per say.

Just wondering what people thoughts and experience has been on this issue.

I have had the exact same problem on both vista x86 anad 64bit versions.

I am running AMD64 3200+, OCZ1gb ddr 400, Nvidia 7800

I have been searching for 3 days to find someone with the same issue... so I
am delighted with finding out somone else is having issues too!

when I install vista 88.61 drivers from Nvidia, the install will not error
out at all, but ends with a black screen that does nothing. I manualy
reboot and have to roll back drivers...

sorry I haven't got any solutions for you...

Hey, I am having the exact same issue! on both vista x86 and 64bit using
nvidia 88.61 vista beta drivers.

I am running a AMD64 3200+, 1gig ddr400, Nvidia 7800

Great, I'm glad someone else too is see something similar. Other people have
somthing close, but not quite like this or it's described differently.

This morning, on a fresh install of Beta 2, I loaded the 32 bit nvidia
drivers. At the end, black screen. Let it sit there for a few minutes,
nothing. I had created a system restore point before this, so I just reset.
It came up telling me it hadn't been shut down properly (duh), so I chose the
restore to known good config and it was happy again.

I'm probably not useing the beta drivers anymore. The system seem stable
without for now. Hopefully Far Cry will run without any major issues.

I also ran into the issue of the recycle bin not deleting files..irritating
as well. Oh well. I'm liking everything else so far though.

No worries on the fix. I was more curious to see if others had similiar
experiences. If you find something, keep me informed. Thanks..

I had the same problem but managed to work around it.

I went and grabbed the older 87.45 drivers from Nvidia's site (from a few
months ago), and updated my video card through device manager. It said that
the driver was not installed correctly, but that's okay.

After I installed that, I ran the 88.61 install again and no black screen.
Not sure why this worked, but I've done it 3 times (going back to restore
points and trying again) and it's worked all 3 times.

See if it works for you guys.

The fix is written in the release notes.

The only slightly off-putting part is where it tells you to unzip the driver
files to a temporary location.

Unzip an exe you ask? How?

Glad you asked.

When you start the installation process from the exe it will unzip itself
into a directory (usually c:/nvidia). You can then look for the .inf file
in there that we're told to edit

We're told to change a date in the inf. Mine was already two months later
than the one written but I changed it anyway and somehow, miraculously this
made the bloody thing work! Why nVidia can't change this in the file
themselves instead of putting people through this is beyond me.

Oh and tonight I discovered, when I installed my brand new 6200 that I had
to reduce the size of the AGP aperture in the BIOS. It was always set to
256 which one would think fine for my new card given that it has 512 mb RAM
(my old one only had 128) but I discovered that I couldn't have it higher
than 128 else I'd be reduced to a default driver with 4 bit colour depth and
800 x 600 resolution. heh.

I hope some of that ramble helps you all.

Ian,

Thanks for the info. I went and tried it. Extracted the driver, edited the
inf file to match the doc on Nvidia's website, but still no soap for me.
Black screen at the end. I changed the date in the inf file to the 3/11 and
version. I wonder if it should have been later. The date in the file was
May something if i remember right.
