Does anyone have any reasonably reliable statistics on how many
Windows users there are in the world?

I think it's about 90% of all computer users. So now all you need to find out
is how many computer users there are in the world. But why would you want to
know? Unless, of course, you are Bill Gates.

this translates to in absolute value, 100, 500, or 900 millions? I
have no idea and that's why I posed the question. The reason is that
I'm writing a business plan in which I need to know approximately many
users of the Windows OS there are in the world.
Google it. The data is a little old, but over 400 million copies of Windows XP have been sold.zulu said:Thanks for the info, I've seen this 90% figure before but what does

FWIW, I just ran across the "statistic"earlier today that said there were
800 million personal computers in the world. Sorry, I can't remember where I
saw it, nor can I attest to its accuracy.
So if that's correct and the 90% number is correct (I can't attest to that
either), that means that there are 720 million computers running Windows.
But that's not the same as Windows users. There are probably lots of single
computer families running Windows, where there are 3, 4 or more Windows
users, and there are people who use computers only at public places like
libraries. So there may be more than that 720 million.
On the other side of the coin, there are people like me who have more than
one computer running Windows (for example a desktop and a laptop) so that
number may be too high.
So you start out with uncertainty about the numbers and then to that you
need to add uncertainty about what the numbers mean. It's almost certainly
not possible to get anything approaching a really accurate number. My guess
is that if you say around 3/4 of a billion, that's about as accurate as you
could hope to get.
800 million personal computers in the world.
This sounds like a very ambitious business plan!Richard said:Google it. The data is a little old, but over 400 million copies of Windows XP have been sold.
Add to that about the same number of copies of Window 98/ME/2K still working and about 50% for
pirated copies and you have a good market base for what ever you are planning.
