Number of files growing fast (XP)

In the past 12 months the number of files
on my computer has grown from 84,000 to
149,000.
These numbers are reported as scanned by Norton
anti-virus after a full scan of the hard drive.
I do regular disk cleanup runs and I also
delete all Perflib*.dat and *.tmp files that
I know aren't needed
Anyone know why the number is growing so much ?
I'm not knowingly creating the files.

Click on Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, Delete Files and Delete
All Offline Files - see if the number reduces.

Anything you installed in the last 12 months that is still on the computer
adds files. Plus service paks and hotfixes uninstall files add more. Hard to
say unless we know what you've installed and how you use the computer.
MP3's, pictures, videos, anything......... they all add up.
Also note that disk cleanup doesn't always clear all the temp files in your
temp folder. Best to check these in explorer and delete manually to be sure
they are gone.
Also clear the nortons protected bin. Files add up in there quick.
 
12 months worth of internet explorer cache files would do
this, depending upon internet usage.
 
Also, 12 months of System Restore Points might be a lot
of files (I don't know how many files each point takes
up, but it's another thought)!

System Restore checkpoints are automatically deleted after 90 days, unless
manually altered via the Registry. Still, 90 days of SR checkpoints can add
up.

I just found out that 39,000 of the files (2.6 GB) are
MS Flight Simulator files !!

I'm new to all of this so please bare with me. I am having the same exact
problem with files growing by leaps and bounds! You mentioned Internet
exploer cache files...how do yo find those and can you safely delete them?
Also, if you go to search,all files and folders and type in .tmp is it safe
to delete all those items that come up?

IE/Tools/Internet Options/General.....

Clear IE History, AutoComplete, Clear the TIF, Clear the RunMRU, Typed URL's
and Clear List (depending on which Start Menu you are using): Right click
the Start button/Properties/Customize/Advanced/Recent Documents/Clear List.

open internet options in control panel. on the general tab click
settings>>>c lick view files and you will see all your temporary internet
files select them all and delete them it will speed up your pc as well as
net speed
