How can I shut off the autopopulate numbering feature?
when I type a number in a number field then go to the next
record access automatically populates the number field,
but only for the next record! How can I turn this off?

You can't. It's a misfeature that was introduced in A2000 and
Microsoft STILL hasn't taken it out. It's absurd.

The only real solution is to not use table or query datasheets; do
your data entry on a Form. Forms don't suffer this problem.
