Before a user logs in the num pad will generate numbers while the num lock is
on. After he logs on the num pad will move the cursor instead of numbers. Can
someone help me with the setting that got changed? I am not sure which it is.
Thank you in advance.

Browse to here in the Registry Editor:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard

In the right pane, right click on InitialKeyboardIndicators and select
Modify.

In the Edit String dialog box, enter the number 2 to have the Num Lock on.

Click OK in the Edit String text box and close the Registry Editor. Reboot.

Sounds like a Jelly Sandwich problem. keys are stuck. The 3 key on my phone is
like this... iso alcohol and cotton swabs to clean the keys after opening the
keyboard, or if it's a cheap keyboard, probably best to just replace it.

I tried this, rebooted and still have the same problem. I don't know what it
is. Thanks for your input.

I was thinking the same, so I had tried that. I have a brand new keyboard
doing the same thing the old one did.

Well you should never rule out getting something brand new with the exact same
problem. Found this out the hard way replacing the same radar box 3 times when
they all had the EXACT same problem.

Next place to look assuming we're on the same page with something sticking
being the problem, would be to trace the electrical connection to the source.
Get a flashlight and see if there's not some corrosion on the contacts that
plug into the machine on the plug or the receptacle.

The receptacle would be 1st choice since you did say you replaced the keyboard.
Next would be a loose connection. Dropped or pulled the keyboard out hard
enough to twist something lately ?
See if there's a bent pin or jammed. Inside the machine, wiggle [reseat] some
connections and see if that doesn't accomplish something if nothing, then get a
GOOD tech with equipment to check the machines internals.

Any of the reseat options would make sense if you've moved anything lately.
These also sound like something with accessibility. That was the 1st problem I
had with XP pro. Some portions of accessibility were ON by default after
installing XP pro. I just had to leave my hand on the shift key too long and
the machine suddenly had a mind of it's own screwing up everything.

Depending on another reply if it's the numlock that's your problem. You can set
that to on or off when booting the machine. Think you hit F8 when booting and
it takes you to some config screens. you'll see NUMLOCK on-off on one of the
pages of settings.

My recommendation: use something other than windoze
try looking here: http://distrocenter.linux.com/
and if you see any windoze ads saying that Linux is more expensive... that's
only because they're comparing windoze to the flavours (distributions) of
Linux that you have to pay for, such as Red Hat
i would recommend SUSE (soo-see) or Mandrake, because of their ease of use
and their stability
or, if you just want to try a flavour of Linux without installing anything
on your computer, you can search for a linux distribution that allows you to
boot from a cd, such as Knoppix, Gnoppix, or MEPIS. in order to boot from a
cd, you may have to change your BIOS settings (BIOS is what allows you to
boot into windoze when you start your computer), and for that you can search
the internet for your BIOS program, and from there to find how to change the
boot order.

Just a suggestion, head over to http://mozilla.org/ too and try out FireFox,
it's another web browser just as is Internet Explorer, but it offers many,
many more features, including safety features. You can also get Kerio
Personal Firewall, it's one that i use, much better than the windoze xp sp2
firewall, and it has, once again, many more features.

Is NUMLOCK still active when they're logged on? If no, have the user press
that button and log off. The active state for NUMLOCK should exist in
subsequent sessions. If someone toggles it off and then logs off, the
setting will revert to NUMLOCK Off.
