I was going through some computer "housecleaning"
((deleting old versions of documents, temp files, &
generally cleaning up my hard drive), and I noticed in the
Windows directory that there is now 1 big folder (214 MB)
called $NtUninstallQ318138$ and about 63 folders ranging
from KB to many MB in the form $NtUninstallQ318138$ (all
in the same folder name format, but different numbers, of
course).

Is it necessary to keep these folders, or can I delete
them?

I did notice that there is also a folder called $xpsp!
hfm$, which I assume is the service pack itself, and
therefore something I should keep.

Clifford;
Once you are sure you will keep Windows XP Service Pack 1.
The files may be hidden, to show the file:
Go to C:\WINDOWS
Click the top TOOLS, click FOLDER OPTIONS, click VIEW
Check the radio button. "Show hidden files and folders"
Click OK and you should now see more files.

Go to C:\WINDOWS and delete "$NTServicePackUinistall$" about 240 mb.
Then go to Add/Remove Programs.
Click Service Pack 1, there will be an error since you just deleted
the file.
Click YES to delete the shortcut.

Use similar procedure to delete similar files for the updates.

Keep it there from your windows updates and sometimes the
updates don't work or agrre with your PC and then you can
un-install, if you go to add and remove programs in
control panel you will see the option to un-install your
windows updates ; they point to these folders you are
talkin about.
