When I run a virus scan on my system, it takes forever
for the program (Norton 2004) to scan these files (there
are about 36 of them in my Windows folder--set as hidden
files). I believe they were created when I updated
Windows XP on the microsoft site. Can I safely delete
these files?

"Hotfixes" are the updates you installed from the Windows Update
website. Do not be tempted to remove them or you will uninstall
the actual updates.

If you wish to safely remove the "uninstall files" for the
Hotfixes (i.e. $NtUninstallQxxxxxx$ files shown in Windows Explorer)
and cleanup your Add/Remove Programs list, visit MS-MVP Doug Knox's
excellent website for instructions.

Note: Doug's program only removes the uninstall files and Hotfix entries
in the Add/Remove Programs listing. It does not remove the
actual updates.

You can delete the folders if the machine appears stable after doing the
updates. If the machine ever has issues with the updates however you may be
forced into doing an inplace upgrade to get the machine to a workable state
due to the fact that we wont be able to manually swap the files back and
forth.
