...where do I start ?

Start by fixing your system clock; you're posting from the future.

Next, what exactly did you do with the BartPE CD? Just booting up with it
shouldn't have changed anything....

don't panic

just boot from your XP cd and enter the repair console

now issue the command fixboot

if that does not solve the problem...
post back

You did not just boot with this CD - you played around too!
I suggest you try to explore things for yourself for a while
before posting.

Can BartPE easily cause this kind of problem?

What's wrong with my clock ? ...this is my 2nd PC ...oh I see - the date !
....sorry about that,
am using this PC because I upset my main one !
....have now changed date.

oooh! philo, ...I've read things in the past about using fixboot, ...or was
it fixmbr that can make thing really make FAT go BANG ! ...I'll have to
look into those quite carefully before using them !

I expect I shall first try digging out ntldr, ntdetect.com and boot.ini from
my last ghost image of that drive.

....anyway enough "fun" on this thread I'm off to fix my main PC ....stop
snickering all of you !!

The Bart PE boot disk does not cause any problems.
It is simply a boot disk, nothing more, nothing less.
It does not affect the existing installation in any way.
It's what the user does after booting with this CD that
does the damage.

Well, here I am back again , ...on my luvly main PC ...that I broke
yesterday !

I couldn't recover from whatever BartsPE did to my hard disk, so I had to
restore a whole Norton image of my c:\ drive, ...(ghosted 7th June, just a
few days ago - JAMMY eh ?) !
Before that I restored just the root-direcotry files - ntldr, ntdetect.com
and boot.ini, (all directories were showing on c:\ ....just all the root
directory files had vanished), ...tried to boot and got "can't find
hall.dll" or something like that, so gave up and did a Norton "System
Restore."

....oh well, you live and learn !

regards, Richard

What exactly is your question? Thinking out loud?
Looking for a forum?

Was waiting for someone to shout, "You CAN't run a XP console app. using
Bart PE," or
Here's how you can make an XP boot cd that you can boot up with, and then
run multi-av from drive c:\
....and 'yes' to thinking out loud I suppose !
:-)

Thanks Lawrence, ...my post is obsolete now - I restored c:\ from Norton
Ghost image I took just a few days ago.
I was doing lots of meddling without reading up on what I was doing first !

Just booting Bart PE cannot do any harm to whatever, since only running CD
or DVD. Have used it many times, never had a problem.
But tools you start from within Bart PE can do any harm one can think of,
from benign cosmetic to destroy everything.
To loose ntldr, hal.dll etc you must have launched something from the Bart
PE environment. What exactly did you do once PE booted ?
Did you build your Bart PE yourself ( allways do it : otherwise possibility
to have malware starting, and illegal since using MS windows parts) ?

Thanks MoiMeme,

I was doing something I shouldn't have, and have now restored c:\ to as it
was before I fiddled with BartPE :-)

Thank you !

I was "playing around," (i didn't say I wasn't!), with trying to boot into a Windows environment from cd so that I could run David H Lipmans multi-av from a known/clean/unhooked (known non-root-kitted), environment, or at least run the NT command line scanners individiually/manually in that environment. Well , his multi-av (which I love and am grateful for), wouldn't work in/on/under it, and it looks like it's knocked out my ntdetect.com, ntldr and/or boot.ini

Actually, the only playing around I did was to try to run multi-av under BartsPE - so in a way I got what I deserved because he told me the other day that multi-av is a XP command console application / or something like that :-)

Anyway I Norton Ghosted that c:\ drive (my main PC sob....sob...) a few days ago, so push come to shove I can restore that drive but, I think I'll have a try at putting things right first. All good practice !

:-)
