Hi, this seems to be a populat topic!
I have a new instal with new XP and new hard drive and I get this message.
I have read a lot of the correspondence and have tried many things suggested
to no avail, including:
using a different XP disk
checking jumpers, cables
there is no floppy in drive
have tried all manner of boot sequences
XP does not get as far as giving me any options eg repair as it restarts so
I can't copy anything to the c drive as it doesn't seem to be there
The hard drive is a WD IDE and I used their setup tool to create a NFTS
boot sector.
Suggestions pls?

try this: boot off the windows xp CD
enter the recovery console
log into your windows (if the option is given)
type: chkdsk /r
when this finishs it will do 1 of 3 things
1> chkdsk found and fixed 1 or more errors (if you get this type 'exit'
and try to get back into windows)
2> chkdsk found unrecoverable errors on the volume (this means that
your hard drive might not be setup right or is not working)
3> no errors just stats

"I can't copy anything to the c drive as it doesn't seem to be there"
thus that article is usless in this situation but it was a good
suggestion.

Hi

Have you tried this:

Boot with your XP CD in the cd drive. Select 'To repair..' by pressing 'R'.
When in the Recovery Console type the following:

"copy X:\i386\ntldr C:\" - without the quotes.

Where X is the letter of your CD drive and C is the letter of your system
drive. Take the XP CD out of the cd drive and reboot into XP normally.

Thanks for reply. How do I get to recovery console? I am not given this
option ie I get the blue screen, files are being copied and before the
process can end the PC restarts
