Hi all, I've got a mate, who has a 200 GB hdd.

His system was going OK. Until he merged the
partitions (C), and (G - the other 1/2 of the 200 GB).

With Partition Magic.

After he said YES for PM to merge the 2 partitions
and rebooted, this NTLDR error turned up.

Would anyone have any idea, on how to get it going again??

What would be the easiest way to get it to boot?

We think it may have changed the letters for this hdd
from C and G, to C and E. And when he's trying to
boot, it's trying to boot from E. Which maybe G, which
didnt have anything on it.

Any ideas? Any info appreciated.

You may be able to repair it using the Recovery Console which can be accessed
after booting from the Windows 2000 CD. To boot from the CD you'll have to
change the boot sequence in the BIOS so that the CD-ROM boots before the HDD.

After entering the RC, enter these commands:

fixboot

and then:

fixmbr

See this article for more help with the RC:

Description of the Windows 2000 Recovery Console

To start the operating system try creating a boot floppy. For the floppy to
successfully boot Windows 2000 the disk must contain the "NT" boot sector.
Format a diskette (on a Windows 2000 machine, not a DOS/Win9x, so the NT
boot sector gets written to the floppy), then copy ntldr, ntdetect.com, and
boot.ini to it;

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\winnt
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\winnt="Windows 0,1"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\winnt="Windows 0,2"
multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\winnt="Windows 1,1"
multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(2)\winnt="Windows 1,2"

Thanx for the info guys. Will give it a try.

Only thing is he tried recovery console. He typed
in the password when asked to, it rebooted.

What do/can you do if it reboots and u cant get into
recovery console??

You get two incorrect tries with the password then on the third it reboots.

OK. BUT what if its the right password?

And the password that he used when installing 2k??

I dont think he has/had a pw for logging into 2k

It is the password (if u enter one in while installing)
the one that its asking for?

Well if it doesn't work then it is *not* right. It is the password for the
local administrator account. It might be the same as when the OS was
installed but it may have, at some point, been changed.

Why not boot the floppy?

I hope you get this fixed. In all likelihood your mbr needs to be fixed. But next time do not use PMs GUI. That is why your mate has had this issue. GUI for PM is MSDOS based which means FAT16 based which means don't use it.

Use the GUI to make the emergency floppies and then never touch it again except to Add\Remove it. Use the emergency floppies for all your partitioning needs. That will avoid "Windows" which is what you want.

Ah ok. He's now formatted it George lol after all this.....

BUT I'll let him know for future merges, if he does any

Thanx
