I am trying to copy data files from an old XP home computer to a new XP home
computer.

The copy always chokes on one of 1,000+ .zip files because they don't have
the "Everyone" group in the NTFS permissions.

Is there a way to get around this?

Is there a way to add the NTFS "Everyone" group with "read" permission to
every file on the old hard drive?

Have you considered using 'files and settings tranfser wizard'.

This is designed to export / import all your files and a whole lot more, to
make setup of a new PC to replace an old PC so much easier.

It isn't affected in the same way with 'permissions'.

I've never heard of "files and settings transfer wizard." Is this a
product? A windows feature? Will it allow me to just select the folders I
want moved?

The Files and Settings Transfer Wizard is the most useful feature that
Windows has ever provided to assist with moving from an old computer to a
new computer:

In Win XP:

Start | Help and Support

type "files and settings transfer wizard"

read "Using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard"

I tried the wizard but it seems bent on copying all files. I just want most
of the files I selected to be moved to the new computer. Am I missing
something?

You are not missing anything -- it's all or nothing.

Why not copy your zipped files to CD-ROM or DVD (thus providing you with a
backup of your files), delete them from your old drive, then use the FSTW?
