Hi,

Can anybody point me in the right direction to a website(s) explaining how
to use NTFS security and permissions settings.

I have recently upgraded my system and found that my original data files are
no longer available as I do not have the correct security/premissions
settings. I have tried allsorts of things like trying to take ownership etc
but it will not let me access the files even though it displays the
directory of the folder in explorer.....

Hi Biderman,

I had the same problem when I transferred my HDD to a new PC. What I did
was I created a new Administrator account and then I took ownership of the
folder.

Hi Birderman,

You have disabled simple sharing in Control Panel > Folder options >
view?

To take ownership of them, right-click the folder, select properties.

Go to the security tab and click advanced. You can take control of the
folders on the owner tab. For the security tab to appear in a WinXP
Pro system, you must disable simple file sharing in the Control Panel
Folder options > view tab. For a WinXP Home system, you must restart
in safe mode and logon as administrator. More details here:
