Is nesesary to keep all the folders like . . .
C:\WINDOWS\$MSI31Uninstall_KB893803v2$

Are they just for uninstalling updates or is there more to it than that?

Correct, they are for removing the update. If the system is stable for some
time after it is applied then those can be deleted. I wait one month to the
next batch of updates, then remove the old folders. To be safe you could
burn them to CD.

Do not remove the $hf_mig$ folder, that's needed for future updates.

Doug Knox has a utility to automate the removal of these uninstall folders
and the corresponding entries for those updates in Add/Remove programs.

If you're confident that you won't need to uninstall either the
service pack or any of the subsequent hotfixes, you can safely delete
those folders. You can then open the Control Panel's Add/Remove
Programs applet and select each of the pertinent removal choices, in
turn. You should get an error message stating that the removal files
are missing, and asking if you'd like to delete the menu option.

Funny - but none were listed there so I did not have to delete them.

Something's not right since the vast majority of updates from windows update
show up in Add/Remove programs. Did you use that utility from Doug Knox'
site? That removes those entries. Otherwise check the box at the top of
Add/Remove to show updates.
