Ron

I would like to back up selected files AUTOMATICALLY from
my C: drive to a second hard drive installed for this
specific purpose utilizing MicrosoftXP's "nt backup," but
am experiencing difficulty with the setup.

The two internal hard drives and my one external hard
drive are not recognized by nt backup as backup devices
and I am not given the "File" option, ala "BackUp My PC."
My reading of what documentation I have found and these
forums suggest I can indeed do this, so would somebody
explain to me "how"?

Referencing any and all Microsoft KB's [for that matter,
ANY reference material] as well as guidance from somebody
who has actually done it would be most appreciated.
Thank-you.
Ron

P.S. I apologize for posting to multiple forums, but the
subject is referenced at no less than seven [7] sites...

NT backup recognizing the hard drives should not be a
issue. When you start it, does it start to look for backup
devices ?? It should list them. I use it on internal and
external drives. I have used it on flash cards, micro
drives. I wiuld re-install it again.

Thanks for the reply. I must be missing something very
basic here because: You asked if, "When you start it [NT
backup], does it start to look for backup devices? The
answer is yes, at least a dialogue window indicates such,
briefly. Nothing but the floppy drive on my desktop
[Home Edition] is listed and on my laptop [Professional
Edition], nothing is listed [laptop is a Dell with
interchangable floppy/CD-ROM, CD-ROM is installed]. I
subsequently moved the external hard drive [USB] from the
desktop to the laptop, it was not listed on either
computer. As an aside, my SanDisk "cruzer" was listed on
the desktop, when it was inserted [haven't tried it on
the laptop].
As you suggested, I uninstalled/reinstalled the NT backup
on the desktop, again the Home Edition software, but did
not do so on the laptop, as it was "native" to the
Professional Edition software on that computer. That
made no difference.
The documentation indicates that under "Backup
destination," "File" will be selected by default. In
another place is states "Backup provides two options for
selecting storage media: "You can back up your data to
a "file" on a storage device [HD, Zip disk, etc.] "This
option is always available."
On both of my computers, representing Home/Professional,
the File option is "greyed" out, i.e. NOT available!
What am I missing here? Does this help you help me?
Your continued assistance will be most appreciated.
Thank-you. Ron
