Novice trying to play DVD with WMP-10, no sound or image

All I have ever used it for is to play MP3 files. Works great.

I received a sales promotion DVD. It autostarts WMP okay and appears to be running.
No sound or image.

How do I approach determining what I need?

I installed WMP 11.
Nothing changed.

I bought and installed Sonic.
Now I have sound... no image/movie.

?

Download VLC Media Player. It will play all your media files including audio
and video and that too for free :)
