Hi all,

I'm completely new to Home Networking, so go easy on me!

I've recently recieved a new Laptop running 'XP Home'. It also has a
wireless network card and a Network Card installed also

My original Desktop Runs Windows 98 and has a Network card.

I want to connect them using a crossover cable.

I basically want to Link the 2 PC's together to share files between
them and a printer/scanner, a bit boring i know but since i'm a novice
i want to start slow! I'd rather not use XP's network wizard as if i
do decide to install broadband at a later date the Win98 desktop will
be the PC permanently connected to the net. So i'd like to know what
IP addresses to assign to each etc.

I've heard there are lots of problems regarding networking between
Win98 and XP Home and i'd rather get the 2 PC's talkign to each other
with as little hassle as possible. So does anyone care to guide me
through it i.e. give me an easy to follow guide to setting up this
highly complicated Network?

if not does anyone know of any sites that will hold my hand?

In advance, thanks for your time.

Cheers,
Mick

Hi, Mick. Since you're a novice, I recommend that you DO run XP's
Network Setup Wizard on both computers. It will automatically make
all the necessary settings, and you can change the settings manually
in the future if your network changes.

In any case, you need to run the Network Setup Wizard on XP to fully
enable file sharing. If you don't, Win98 won't be able to access
shared resources on WinXP.

If you want to do everything manually, including IP address
configuration, here's how:

On Windows XP:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the network connection.
3. Click Properties.
4. Double click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)".
5. Click "Use the following IP address".
6. Enter IP address 192.168.0.2.
7. Enter subnet mask 255.255.255.0.

On Windows 98, go to Control Panel | Network and:

1. Add these network components if they aren't already present:

TCP/IP protocol
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

2. Remove these network components if they're present:

IPX/SPX protocol
NetBEUI protocol
Client for NetWare networks

3. Double click "TCP/IP->network adapter".

4. Click "Specify an IP address".

5. Enter IP address 192.168.0.1.

6. Enter subnet mask 255.255.255.0.

7. Click the Identification tab.

8. Set the workgroup name to the same name as the Windows XP computer
uses (default for XP is MSHOME).

When you get broadband, I strongly recommend using a broadband router
to share the connection with both computers. It's easier to set up
and much more reliable than using Win98 as an ICS (Internet Connection
Sharing) host. BTW, the original version of Win98 doesn't have ICS.
You would need Win98 Second Edition.
