Notification Area

I use 1 USB connection for 2 devices which I don't need at the same
time. Up until very recently when I unplugged 1 device & plugged in the
other the new device would show in the Notification Area accompanied by
a "ding" sound.

I've tried System Restore however No icon appears.

Any ideas on how to get the Notification Area icons for these devices
please?

I forgot to mention that I don't have the "hide inactive icons" box in
Task Manager ticked.
