Notification Area and Taskbar Size

My notification area and taskbar have doubled in depth and unlike Win98 I
cannot drag them back to a normal single line. Windows Help is no help.
Can someone please explain the procedure for getting back to normality and
sanity?
 
First right click on the taskbar and make sue that lock taskbar is not
ticked, you should then be able to reduce the size as you could in win98.

Rt\click on blank area of the Taskbar. Use the menu to Unlock it, then grab
the top edge and pull down. Relock if you want to.

Thanks both, but the taskbar was not locked and now I have right clicked on
the taskbar it has shot to the top of the screen and I still can't move it!!!
 
Thank you all for your help. Nothing worked so I used system restore to
return to the status quo ante, and "fingers crossed!".
