Can someone help me out here?

I have Windows XP Home Eedition. My Notepad is not
working. I don't know what is wrong. (Notepad is just
pad for typing letters and to save important
information. Lucky I have back up discs)

I click on Notepad then I click on open. Notepad freezes
and i end up closing it and I get an error message saying
it is non-responsive.
This is also happening at "My Computer" as well. I go to
Drive A same problem as Notepad freezes. Then I go to
the blue frames outside of Notepad, left click mouse and
freezes. I see an hourglass at My Computer and Notepad,
and it freezes.
Let me know what do you believe I can do. I called
Customer Service of Microsoft, but I don't want to pay a
hefty charge for tech help.

Last I went to Start (bottom left) I went to Control
Panel and double clicked on System Icon then went to
Restore and that has failed to help restore Ntepad and My
Computer.
