Hello
I am having a problem with notepad. if I click to open a text document
nothing happens. when I go to my accessories the notepad icon is not right
it looks like a window, the same as if I delete a program the wrong way and
leave the short cuts there. if I click the icon notepad opens up and I am
able to path it to the document I need opening. what I want to do is run a
windows setup like I used to do with my old windows millennium, this used to
replace any missing windows files, but windows xp wont let me it says,
upgrade, install optional windows components, perform additional tasks, and
check compatibility. is there any option to just run a setup as I would like
to.
Thank you very much Stan.

Hi Stan,

Go to Start > Run > cmd (press enter)
and type
sfc /scannow (Press enter)

This will ask for the XP CD. It will repair and replace damaged or
missing system files. You may need to know the location of the folders
Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 and Windows\System32\dllcache.

Good luck

Wow, I was starting to think I was the only person with that problem. The Notepad.exe file was completely missing on my system. Finally SOMEONE has the answer! Thanks roger. Ive been posting for a week about this and no one answered until now.

Thanks again!

Hey, well it scanned, but notepad still isnt fixed. It also didnt ask for me to insert my xp cd... did I do something wrong?? I did exactly what you said before.. :-/ Help?!

Well, it should have asked for the CD. It's very strange that it did
not. You can go to Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File
types tab, scroll to .txt files click change and select notepad to
open that kind of file. This should fix the association.

If not, consider notepad alternatives:

Ok, well notepad wasnt an option for the file types. But I changed it to open with word pad instead, so I can atleast view my existing txt files. Im going to look at that alt. notepad link you posted in your original reply and see if that works out for me. Thanks for your help.
