Every time I select NotePad from my accessories list I
get "the NTVDM CPU has encountered an Illegal instruction"
I am using Windows XP Home Edition.
I can't find Notepad in Add/Remove Programs to un and re-
install it.
Any Help on this?
Thanks,

I suggest using a different program. Lots of free ones available. I
personally use "Editpad lite". They do more than notepad.

Sounds like Notepad.exe is corrupted. The message you got,
was a handler for 16-Bit applications which doesn't have any
correlation to starting Notepad.
Use Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\System32
Locate Notepad.Exe and delete - System File Checker will
immediately replace the executable from the Dllcache. (2 or
3 seconds), then retry starting Notepad again.

Notepad is just an executable file. Run a search for "notepad.exe"
and delete it. You can reinstall it from your Windows CD, or you
can download one of the many Notepad replacement programs that are
better than Notepad ever was. The two that I like best are Notetab
Lite and Metapad. Both are free as a bird, as in you don't pay
Microsoft a dime for them. The best sort of free there is. Just
associate your TXT files with whatever you decide to use as a
replacement for Notepad, and when you double click a text file,
the replacement program will open it.

It is a basic part of the system, not for removal. It sounds to me as
if the shortcut represented by the menu entry is damaged and is loading
notepad.com (a 16 bit program) instead of notepad.exe. NTVDM is the
environment for executing 16 bit programs. Right click on the menu
item, take Properties and change if needed.
