No doubt it has been posted before, but is there a straightforward note
taker? Maybe something that will create folders/books for different notes,
nice interface with back-up facilities?

KeyNote is excellent. It's got a tabbed structure which I find
particulary useful. Haven't tried TreePad.

It's abandonware though. I has been put into the open seorce community
but apparently the code is so chaotic that it's unlikely to be
developed any further. Also tabbed is Seo Note:

You can import from and export to Keynote and Treepad files, so it is
claimed. It has bugs though: I can't change text font and background
colour nor import from Treepad Lite 3.0 files (import from Keynote
works ok).

Yes this program is no longer being developed. This thread prompted me to do
a little research today and as far as I can see, nothing really compares to
KeyNote in terms of speed and features.

Or, does anyone know of something that does?

I've also been looking for a notes program, but none of the many I'cve
checked out do what I'm looking for. I have folders full of txt files,
and wantt an app that will treat each txt file as a node in a tree,
thus enabling me to write to lots of txt files individually without
needing to open each one by hand individually. But not a single one
I've seen is capable of even changing where it saves its files. Only
one is capable of working with several txt files, but sufficient
functionality just isnt there.

It would have been helpful if you had mentioned the ones you've looked
at. The only one I know is Tombo. It's constantly under development
(open source) and there is a forum.

Maybe TOMBO at http://tombo.sourceforge.jp/En/
TOMBO allows you to designate the storage folder for your notes.
Any text files in the chosen folder become nodes in the notes tree
Good luck in your freeware search.

The other loveliy things about KeyNote are:

1. Extremely easy to navigate and edit with keystrokes
2. Exports into a non-proprietary format; therefore, easy to export and
use file in separate WP program

I've tried lots, and the only thing Keynote doesn't have that I would
like is a PDA version with the ability to sync back and forth.
