My OS Win.XPPro SP2, Office 2003

After one of the latest unknown Microsoft automatic updates (although to be
fair this did not demonstrate itself immediately after the download for
several days) my PC on boot up gets stuck with "Welcome" screen for several
minutes.
It never did that before. Is there anything I can do to overcome this
problem, before it becomes permanent? Thank you.
It was suggested by another Newsgroup that I try the following:
Check your start-up,it is probably loading applications you do not need at
this time.Start/Run/type MSCONFIG/click Enter, click the start-up tab
Disable/uncheck programs not needed, do not uncheck your anti-virus
Click Apply and Close. Reboot It should load a lot faster now.
This did not work! and my PC is showing a Notice that it does not like it!
Any suggestions on what to do to cure this problem? Thank you.

Thank you for the reply.
This is the first action I tried, but it would seem that I cannot Defrag
either. The process ALSO gets stuck after 1% of the defrag starts and
however long I wait it does not continue! There is no problem with viruses
etc. I have a daily updated AVG Antivirus and Zone Alarm Firewall running.
One additional item I should mention. This is on a standby computer, which
is only booted up once a day for updates to take place.
What do you suggest I should do next?

Run DiskCleanUp and see if Disk Defragment then runs.

What anti-spyware programmes have you run?

Are you running your anti-virus programme with update definitions?

Hope this helps.

Norton antivirus.

If you disk defragger is hanging, then google for Diskeeper9 and download a
30-trial version. It does industrial strength defragging and should be able
to straighten you out so that the XP defragger can run normally.
