not using DNS just WINS

Seems maybe the installation or misinstallation of Opera
and Netscape as browsers might have destroyed the DNS
capabilities of XP. I had to reformat a box due to not
joining an AD domain that is pure DNS. I had tried
reinstalling IE 6, reinstalling TCPIP, removing all
antivirus and programs not needed to no avail, even tried
a repair installation and nothing. Just a heads up. All
DNS flusing and deleting old temp/internet files did
nothing either as even for Downloaded program
files/objects.

How are you determining that DNS is not being used as opposed to not working
correctly? What errors did you see when trying to join and AD domain? Could
you resolve other hostnames?

And it would be interesting to have an answer to one of your questions from
the previous thread too... It was "Does nsloookup work?"

I'm also interested by the error that was originally quoted there, it was
"10106". 10106 is WSAEPROVIDERFAILEDINIT, is "The requested service
provider could not be loaded or initialized."

Which implies to me that something is failing in the local TCP/IP stack
environment. Probably one of those, increasing common, problems caused by
software firewalls that mess things up royally, for instance often failing
to remove themselves correctly when uninstalled. That's what that one
sounds like to me, some package has installed an LSP. That is, a "Layered
Service *Provider*", which is inserted into the networking stack. If the
software is installed without the LSP registration being removed from the
settings in the Registry then that sound exactly the error that would
result.

Did you have any firewall or anti-virus software installed? Or it could be
spyware or a viruses that has messed things up.

See the message (and thread) at
http://groups.google.co.uk/[email protected]
A 10106 error there is only fixed by a complete deletion of all Winsock
Registry key and TCP/IP re-install. A similar recommendation is made at
http://groups.google.co.uk/groups?h...ff&selm=#[email protected]

I maybe jumped to assumptions on Opera/Netscape but no DNS
nslookups or anything worked as far as DNS is concerned.
This machine was used by a research group and we did not
load or take care of the unit so I do not know whether the
McAfee antivirus it had on it had the firewall protection
at one time. I also do not know if XP firewall was turned
on at one time. I have seen XP firewall break
communications and have to reinstall an app before due to
it not "turning back on ports" to allow app to
communicate. I do not know every registry entry to fix
every problem I encounter, it would be nice though if I
did. I realize a trojan or or other problems might have
existed on machine as to a previous post on the subject.
Just couldn't find fix that was faster than a reformat.
Spent 1.5 afternoons looking at it.
Thanks,
