What exactly do you wish to do? A Clean Install? A Repair Install? Use
the Recovery Console (that's the only activity that involves a
password)?

What license came with the Compaq laptop? (You can tell by looking at
its Certificate of Authenticity [COA] sticker.) XP Home? XP Pro? XP MCE?

What kind of Windows XP CD do you have? Is it Retail, branded OEM, or
generic OEM (System Builder)? Also, XP Home? XP Pro? Or XP MCE?

Assuming you have the correct installation CD and you want to perform a
Clean Install, this will get you started:

There is no (PASSWORD) issue, as the install cd doesn't have a password, nor
does it require one. you appear to be talking about an install key please
list the exact steps your taking, and the exact wording of the error screen
you mention.

Is this a used pc? it appears so, where did you purchase the install cd?
Did it come with the PC?

I think you're not describing the problem accurately, because XP CDs don't
use a password for installs. If you are trying to get into the *recovery
console*, that's a different thing entirely.

Suggest going to HP's website for further information. They make the
Compaq laptops.

You could also post more details in this newsgroup, as suggested by others.
