Not recognizing data file

I tried to use FAST to restore my settings, but the program won't recognize
the file on my compact flash. I then copied the files (DAT file and backup
file) to the hard drive and tried to get FAST to load the settings. The
program keeps telling me to type a valid path because the location does not
contain stored information. I have placed the files in their own folder and
moved the location of the files but neither of those things seemed to work.
HELP!

The .DAT file within the USMT2.UNC folder should be named IMG00001.DAT
There should also be a file named "status". If you have these two files within
the USMT2.UNC folder, you should only browse to the "USMT2.UNC" folder
when using the wizard.

You need to browse to the location of the "USMT2.UNC" folder.
For example, my location is: D:\Old Computer Files\Transfers\USMT2.UNC

The only two files on my CF card are named "Laptop 10-24-04" (Microsoft
Backup File) and "USMT2IMG" (DAT File). There is no folder named USMT2.UNC
containing these files on the card. I copied the files to "C:\Documents and
Settings\Chris\My Documents\Old Computer Settings" and tried to use this
location to load the settings. Do I have to rename the files and the folder
in order to get FAST to work?

I renamed the containing folder "USMT2.UNC", the DAT file "IMG00001.DAT", and
the Microsoft Backup File "Status". I then had FAST browse to the new
location and it is still telling me that the location specified does not
contain stored information. It just doesn't recognize the data fie as valid.

I am wondering if I can extract the files and the documents from the DAT
file with some other program or in some other way. I am not as worried about
the settings as I am about my documents and some of the zipped files that are
in there.

Apologies for the empty post - I'm new to this interface.

I have the same error messages and would dearly appareciate any help.

In my case I have rebuilt the PC but want to restore the files to a
different computer as I suspect the registry that I have saved could be
corrupt. I am trying to restore an outlook file that should have been on the
server but was not. My files were named correctly and I have tried moving the
files to a local computer to no avail. The computer that I backed up from was
running SP2. This is the first SP2 computer I have tried to use the tool with
and this is the first time I have had a problem. Coincidence?

It is worth noting that we are on a workgroup here with our servers bring on
a domain -so I cannot use the USMT (as I understand).

HELP! *

Ok I have searched every where for a answer could not find one.
What I did is reran the file transfer wizard copied the status file
renamed the old status file status.old pasted the new status file in
place of the old one started the transfer wizard and every thing worked
fine.

I may have the same problem as Skyguy. I think I know what happened, but I
don't know how to fix it.

I think that when i transferred from the old computer I told FAST wizard
that my 1GB flash drive was a "removable media". Now I get a prompt to
"insert disk 2" but I can't. If I tell the FAST wizard that my .DAT file is
on an "other" device (removeable drive or network) then I get a different
type of error msg.

In either case I can't re-run FASt on the old computer because I formatted
the disk on my system and reinstalled clean. It was getting really really
slow and now it's fine but I can't access my data.

Am I screwed?
