Hi, I am posting on behalf of my girlfriend.
I am a mac user and have very little experience of xp so if you do respond
to this do not be afraid of patronising me!
She loaded Norton onto her computer and when it restarted, after xp loaded
up only the wallpaper appeared. No start bar and no desktop items nothing to
click on cannot access the computer at all.
Please help
Thank you

You haven't said what "Norton" program, but I recommend your girlfriend gets
rid of Norton and and most any other Symantec programs such as NIS or their
anti-virus. The programs are bloated, resource heavy and can cause problems
sooner or later.

Try to uninstall the Norton program from Add/remove programs. Then go to
the Symantec tech support site and download their removal utility for that
program. Hopefully the system will run after Norton is cleaned off, but
it's really hard to get rid of it. Another option is to talk with Symantec
tech support (good luck with that).

For anti-virus try one of the free AV programs such as from Avast (which is
what I use), AntiVir, AVG or CA eTrust (low cost). For firewall there is
Sunbelt Software's Kerio Personal Firewall (free and paid) or Zone Alarm
(free and paid). The free versions work fine.

For other malware such as trojans, adware, spyware, etc there are a variety
of good, free programs that should be used. Several are needed. Here are
some links for dealing with malware.

Troll? Isn't that what your mother raised?

It is obvious that it was _YOUR_ mother who raised a troll. Can't you
find a better way to amuse yourself? Perhaps a long walk on a short pier?

Please don't feed the trolls. It does nothing to stop them. It probably
encourages them, since it gives them the attention they obviously crave. And
it makes their posts posts visible to the rest of us who have already
killfiled them.

Just killfile them yourself.
