"Not enough system resources to display properly"...so now what?

I got this message while trying to create a huge workbook.

Basically I had an array of 33,000 rows and 60 columns.

50 of the columns were calculationg all sort of things, tied to other
cells, using if statements, etc. I knew I was creating a significantly
sized workbook, but thought it would be ok.

While dragging the final formulas in the array, the system nearly
crashed and said "not enough system resources to display properly".
Now I cannot even get back into excel and view the file to salvage it,
and I haven't saved in a while...

Is my computer the problem? I thought with 1.7 Ghz and 1 gig of RAM I
could probably handle anything in excel, but this seems to be pushing
it. Should I split the array into different pages, or will I need to
separate into different workbooks instead?

I don't have as powerful pc as you, but sometimes when I'm dragging the formulas
down, I'll stop every so often (starting with a small number of rows (like 50)
and extending it until it almost breaks.

It seems to give excel a chance to catch its breath.

(Sometimes, I'll convert all but the last formula to values, and then drag the
formula down. Convert all but the last, and so on and so on. A real pain.)
