Hi all. i'm networking win/xp-sp1 with win98 and it normally works.
sometimes, i get error msg '<drive> is not accessible. not enough memory
available. quit some programs' when I display network neighborhood in IE6 and
click on one of the drives. i get this on the 98 machine (xp works OK). the
only program running is IE.
any thoughts?

i can do ipconfig and then ping the ip address from both computers.

Are both computers 100% spyware and virus-free? If you think they are,
how have you determined this?

Malke

Hi Malke - thanks for trhe reply.
I ran norton anti-virus (current definitions),
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and
webroot/spy sweeper on each system:

No virus on either machine, no spyware on the 98 machine and the same 3
hits on the xp machine that have been there since day one:
Found System Monitor: Cdilla, version 3.02
Found System Monitor: Cdilla, version 3.02
Found Adware: Backweb, version 1
I did not remove the three above items.

PS When I said that it normally works --> it worked months ago and then the
IP address changed (why ?) and the norton firewall stopped it. I discovered
this firewall problem last night and fixed same by allowing the IP address,
but in the process received the above mentioned error on the 98 machine. I
don't know where to look. Any other ideas?

Sounds like the IRPStackSize problem.

The problem is on the machine you are attempting to connect to,
not the machine where you see the error message.

On the computer you are attempting to connect to,
Check the event viewer for an event ID 2011.

Usual fix :
You need to fix a parameter called IRPStackSize

On the computer you are attempting to connect to,
Set the IRPStackSize back to the default (15 ).
Perform the following steps:

1. Start the registry editor (e.g., regedit.exe).
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\lanmanserver\parameters.
3. Double-click IRPStackSize
(or if this registry setting doesn't exist, create it of
type DWORD and ensure the case is correct).
4. Change the base to decimal, set the value to 15, and click OK.
5. Reboot the computer.

Norton AV is usual suspect for breaking it.

There's a KB article about this, too.

Antivirus Software May Cause Event ID 2011 (Q177078)

Thank you Ron! Followed your directions and it worked as stated. I would
never have suppected the connected-to machine.
