when trying to format a new cd using dla i (all of a sudden) get the message
"format failed due to general failure". I can read existing cd's fine. My
older cd's are 10X multispeed. The new ones I'm having trouble with are
16X-24X ultra speed. Could this be my problem?

Can you write to these disk at full speed?

Try lowering the speed that the drive is trying to use on the disk.

I should have been more clear.
That's what I was wanting to know; is if you could do a regular write to
these CDs.
Meaning; your drive was still getting it done.

As far as changing the speed, you can do that with most software when you go
to actually burn the CD.(regular CD creation, not packet formatting a cd)

Ex: Nero, without the wizard, gives you a window where you can choose to
burn at a slower speed than the drive max.

I would get a couple of slower speed CD-RW disc and just experiment with
them and see if your drive can format one. Sometimes it comes down to the CD
manufacture.
I have a notebook with one of those 24x DVD/CD-RW combo drives. There is one
brand of disc (Samsung 52x) that it will only allow a max write speed of 4x.
Now, that's a bit slow. But, with most major brands it burns at 24x.

As a last resort, you could reinstall the formatting software. Or, choose a
different formatting software.

Rich, thanks for your interest in trying to solve my problem. I've finally
pinpointed the problem. It's with the new cd's I bought. They are all labeled
"ultra speed". I don't know what that actually means but my old cd's are
labeled "multispeed". I purchased some new ones yesterday labeled
"multispeed" and I can format and use them with no problems. I'd be
interested in knowing why the "ultra speed" cd's won't work in my burner tho.
